Massive Gen Z Partisan Gap

Massive Gen Z Partisan Gap

  • The partisan gap between young men and young women is the largest of any age group and may still be widening

  • An August New York Times/Siena College poll of voters in six swing states found that men ages 18 to 29 favored Trump by 13 points, while women ages 18 to 29 favored Kamala Harris by 38 points

  • This 51-point gap dwarfs that of voters ages 30 to 44, which has a 31-point gender voting gap

  • The partisan gap between young men and women has widened in recent years

  • In 2020, Harvard's Institute of Politics found that 42% of young men identified as Democrats versus 20% who identified as Republican

  • This April, the same survey found that 32% are Democrats and 29% are Republicans

  • Over the same period, women have not moved as much. In 2020, 43% of young women identified as Democrats, compared to 44% today

  • Young women are by far the most liberal and Democratic of all female age groups

  • Among the entire voting base, a new ABC poll shows an 18-point partisan gap between men and women. According to the survey, women support Harris by a 13-point margin while men support Trump by a 5-point margin

  • We should note, however, that polls have historically undercounted Trump supporters. The ABC poll was also conducted in the wake of the DNC, which may have given Harris a popularity boost

  • Theories abound as to why the partisan gap between young men and young women is so wide. Many point to their disparate social media experiences: Young men use Reddit and Twitter more, while young women use TikTok and Pinterest more

  • They also tend to occupy different chambers on each respective platform
