SCOTUS Sides with Biden

SCOTUS Sides with Biden

  • The US Supreme Court (SCOTUS) ruled 5-4 that federal border officials could remove razor wire that Texas authorities had erected to keep migrants out

  • Texas’ attorney general sued the Biden administration last October, alleging federal agents had illegally cut razor wire barriers 20+ times to “admit aliens illegally entering Texas”

  • The case made its way to SCOTUS, which on Tuesday sided with the Biden administration

  • Following the news, a White House spokesperson called Texas’ use of razor wire a “stunt,” claimed it made border officials’ jobs harder, and called for a bipartisan deal on border security

  • The US and UK bombed eight Houthi targets on Monday, including locations used to attack Red Sea shipping

  • The attack marked the US’ eighth and the UK’s second against Houthi targets in recent weeks

  • “We again acted as part of a coalition of like-minded countries committed to upholding the rules-based order, protecting freedom of navigation and commerce, and holding the Houthis accountable for their illegal…attacks on mariners and commercial shipping,” the Pentagon said

  • Jimmy Donaldson, a.k.a. MrBeast, said he earned $250,000 from his first full-length video on X

  • The video, shared on January 15, came after months of Elon Musk trying to woo MrBeast to the platform

  • Mr Beast announced the earnings on Monday, although he called that number a “facade,” suggesting that advertisers paid for ads on his specific video

  • Other X users were quick to point out that they made much less revenue than Donaldson with similar engagement levels, implying X rigged the revenue system to benefit Donaldson

  • Elon Musk has rejected that allegation, although Donaldson said he will give the $250,000 away

  • Israel’s army said 24 of its soldiers were killed in Gaza on Monday, its worst single-day death toll of the war so far

  • The dead included 21 reservists who were killed when mines planted by Israel inside a building exploded, possibly due to enemy fire

  • Israel confirmed that the three other deaths were caused by a separate attack in southern Gaza

  • Israel’s military now tallies 217 deaths since its invasion so far versus an unknown number for Hamas. Reacting to the news, Israel’s prime minister vowed to continue on to “absolute victory”

  • Netflix agreed to a $5B deal to broadcast the WWE’s flagship “Raw” program over the next decade

  • Unlike other streaming services, Netflix has not broken into live sports, electing instead to produce “sports adjacent” content, such as sports-related dramas or documentaries

  • Per the new deal, though, Netflix will acquire the rights to live-stream “Raw” effective January 2025, acquiring them from cable TV network USA Network

  • It will also acquire the right to livestream all WWE programs to viewers outside the US

  • Turkey’s parliament ratified Sweden’s bid to join NATO, clearing a major hurdle for Sweden to join the US-led military alliance

  • Turkey has delayed Sweden’s application for 20 months over concerns that Sweden supports groups that Turkey deems to be terrorists

  • Turkey’s president is expected to give Sweden final approval in the coming days

  • Hungary – whose leader has ties to Russia – is now the only country opposing Sweden’s bid
